How do you create a character backstory?
If you want to create a character, you have a few options these days. You can do it the old fashioned way and write it out yourself. Or, you can use one of the modern backstory generators, like this one. Either way, you want to come up with enough of a story to really flesh out the character, making sure to consider the character’s personality, outlook on life and outlook on the world. An RPG generator alone will not get you all the way with an award winning character!
Incorporate these details and information into the text of your character's story, explaining how they’ve affected your character and what they’ve learned from these events. If your character has a specific goal, problem or characteristic, they should be well fleshed out in the character's background. Just don't add too many adjectives in the content. All these tips will help you make better character backgrounds for all your DND characters.
What are some tragic background ideas?
If you're playing D&D and want some tragic backstories or a sad background, consider these:
- Illness sickened a close family member.
- A beloved parent has been haunting the character since a young age.
- A close friend betrayed the character at an early age and has a fear of written text.
- The character was kidnapped by a shady group and the character had to escape.
- A close family friend was hurt in front of the character.
- The character was born with a physical disability and a funny name.
- The character's mother was possessed by somebody long dead.
- The character is an outcast who doesn’t belong, somebody who must always keep moving.
- The character is a wanted fugitive who is forced to hide his true identity and character level, even from his friends.
- The character’s family was forced to move around all the time because of the mother and her age (200 years old due to magic.)
- The character was held captive by a monster or some other evil force.
- A close friend was cursed to be evil.
To make your D&D character even more interesting, try mixing and matching or combining several of these tragic background ideas into one. You can then write it yourself or use a generator to get started. Add a few adjectives where needed to spice the text up some.
What are some heroic backstory ideas?
If you're playing D&D and want some heroic ideas for your PC, consider these:
- A trained military fighter is called to fight in a war - and to save his father who was captured.
- The character was trained by his father to wield some sort of magical power - and he's looking for an ancient text.
- The character was captured but escaped with the help of a heroic or powerful friend who has no name.
- The character was in the rescue party that saved a kidnapped friend.
Try mixing and matching or combining several of these heroic ideas into one. Again, you can then write this all out yourself or use generators to get started. I've built quite a few RPG generators over the last few years, and I can say they're helpful. This backstory generator is just one of many I've created.
How do you make a unique character?
Overall, here are some tips to make a unique character:
- Incorporate their personality, outlook on life and outlook on the world into the backstory.
- Consider the character’s motivations and goals.
- Consider the character’s personality and desires.
- Think about who or what inspired the character.
- Make the character’s goals and personality flaws readily apparent.
